Boult played for the New Zealand A team on their winter training tour in 2007. He represented New Zealand Under-19 in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. Boult has played a total of 113 first-class matches, taking 433 wickets at an average of 26.86.

Trent Boult made his international debut for New Zealand on 9 December 2011, with a Test match against Australia. He made his ODI debut against the West Indies, on 11 July 2022. Boult made his T20I debut on 9 February 2013, against England.
In the 2015 Cricket World Cup, New Zealand became the runner-up in the tournament. Boult took 21 wickets along with Mitchell Starc, becoming the joint-leading wicket-taker at the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
